6. Conclusion- What have we learnt?

Food show in these three novels are used to highlight change as the series progresses. The first novel uses food to highlight the transition from the muggle world to the magical world. It is also used to invite the reader to a higher fantasy so we are able to experience Harry’s journey to Hogwarts. In contrast, the second novel portrays food as a means of destruction due to the negative connotations associated with it. In the third novel, it is described to be desirable something which entices the child reader thus making it more tempting. Through these examples it becomes evident that food is a symbolism for change. The meaning of food is not consistent throughout the three texts and is constantly changing supporting the idea that food is never consistent and change is an on-going process. The progression in Harry’s mentality as well as his journey to self-discovery is done through the use of food as we are able to identify his growth through the use of symbolism.

So, the chocolate frogs. Bertys bots every flavour beans. Fred and Georges puking pastels. All these magical treats that get us Harry Potter fans excited to read more. These are only some of the examples I will be exploring in this blog. They make us intrigued as we wonder what is it about these sweets that make us want to try them? J.K Rowling is able to turn food which is very familiar to us to something which is unfamiliar. In our muggle world we have sweets such as Haribo and Jelly Beans which some may find appeasing. However, the question I’m posing is what is it about Bertys Bots every flavour beans that makes us want to attend Honey Dukes? The use of high fantasy allows the reader to delve into the magical world and experience it for themselves. 5.Sweets as a comforter or a danger?

So onto a brighter note: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban the first time we are introduced to Honeydukes sweet shop. Honeydukes is the one place I would love to go visit if I was able to attend Hogsmeade. A child’s dream, a sweetshop filled with weird yet bizarre sweets. I mean if you don’t believe me let’s take a look at Ron’s reaction towards it: `”It’s this sweetshop” said Ron, a dreamy look coming over his face’ (61). Ron is shown to transition from a conscious to an fantasy state as he becomes memorised by the numerous amounts of sweets that can be bought at Honeydukes. However, this is not the first time we are introduced to these desirable sweets. In the first novel, we are introduced to the sweet trolley located on the Hogwarts Express. In this scene, we see Ron and Harry tuck in to a vast amount of delicious sweets which you and I would never find in the muggle world. 1. What is it about the magical food that entices us?

What do we think of when we say the words Harry Potter? Do we instantly think of the boy who lived? The chosen one? Voldemort’s enemy? J.K Rowling invites wizards, witches and muggles on a journey of self-discovery. When reading Harry Potter as a child, I only focused on the major story line- Voldemort’s revenge on Harry Potter. However, J.K Rowling uses motifs to show the hidden symbolism in her novels. Food is one motif which is overlooked as it plays and important part in Harry’s life. Critic Jacqueline Corinth comments on the use of food in these novels by stating ‘ Food is a central issue in the novels from the very beginning when we learn that although Harry Potter is not technically starving at the hands of his aunt and uncle he is incredibly underfed both literally and emotionally’ (269) which implies that food is able to give us an insight into Harry’s life as a child.
